Sick wife may increase likelihood of divorce

When a Texas couple gets married, they most likely intend to weather both the good and the bad times together. However, a recent study found that, should the wife fall ill with a serious illness, the couple's marriage is more likely to end in divorce.

The researchers looked at the onset of numerous illnesses, such as lung disease, stroke and cancer, that occurred during the course of over 2,700 marriages between the years 1992 and 2010. The bottom line is that couples are 6 percent more likely to get a divorce if the wife becomes ill than if no illness is suffered. Strangely, the same study found that, should the husband fall ill, the rate of divorce is not affected. However, 24 percent of the marriages examined ended in widowhood.

It was not known why divorces between a husband and an ill wife are more likely to occur. The head researcher suggested that ill wives not be as satisfied with the care provided by their husbands, or the stress caused by providing care for an ill spouse while trying to work and provide an income can lead to the dissipation of a marriage. Because of the amount of emotional stress that may come with caring for an ill loved one, it is recommended that the caregiver seek therapy.

If a Texas couple decides to get a divorce due to an illness, the process can quickly become complex, especially if the decision was not made amicably. A family law attorney may assist with providing a list of all assets that were owned by the couple and all assets that each person brought into the marriage so that a settlement regarding the division of property can be reached.
