Children may be confused by delayed divorce plans

Making the decision to get divorced can be difficult for Texas parents. Many struggle with the decision for months or even years. During this period of indecision, they may fight with each other or decide to separate for a long period of time. Children may become confused if their parents are prolonging the decision to divorce.

There are many reasons why parents may be reluctant to divorce. Some may have issues with each other that they think they may be able to work out eventually. Other parents may hold religious views that do not condone divorce. If they were the children of divorced parents themselves, they may not want their own children to go through the same experience.

When two parents talk about divorce for a long time before filing the paperwork, children can become very confused and preoccupied by their parents' plans. Some may hold out false hope that their parents will stay together and then become very disappointed when they do not. Children who anticipate their parents' divorce may feel a sense of relief when the process finally starts. Whatever the circumstances, it is usually important for divorcing parents to explain what is happening to their children.

Parents are often worried about going forward with a divorce because they do not know how it will affect their child custody rights. A family law attorney can often help a parent to work out a schedule for physical child custody and visitation and develop a detailed parenting plan as part of the negotiations concerning other applicable divorce legal issues.
