Astronaut, wife reach divorce settlement

In past posts we've noted the growing national trend of older couples in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s seeking divorce. This rise in "gray divorce," as it's come to be called, has made clear that not only are couples living longer, but are also keeping the possibility of separation on the table. When a marriage has proven disappointing or unhealthy, America's seniors are rightly opting to separate, rather than stick with to a failing bond.

One 82-year-old man whose exploits inspired multitudes across Texas, the U.S., and the world finalized what will be his third divorce late last month. Buzz Aldrin, famous along with Neil Armstrong as one of the first astronauts to ever walk on the moon in 1969, finished up a divorce with his wife, Lois Driggs Cannon. The couple had been married for 23 years.

Aldrin himself initially filed for the divorce in June 2011, citing irreconcilable differences between the couple. Reports of a settlement intimate that Aldrin's ex-wife will receive a large portion of his wealth and assets, including half of a $475,000 bank account and $9,500 each month in spousal support payments.

Aldrin isn't the only aging celebrity to recently file for divorce. Al and Tipper Gore, Morgan Freeman, Robin Williams, and Mel Gibson have all obtained divorces in recent years after long, multi-decade marriages to their spouses.

In matters as serious as marriage and divorce, it is never too late to make a fresh start when separation becomes necessary. In these situations, working with a family law attorney, especially when high assets are involved, can help to secure the best possible outcome and terms.
