Millions of dollars given to wife in alimony

While Texas audiences enjoyed the candid discussions of alimony in the comedic "The Alimony Tour," the host of the one-man show was actually using the proceeds from the tour to pay his ex-wife alimony. The star of the show, John Cleese, had to perform the show in order to comply with the settlement regarding his high-asset divorce.

John Cleese married a psychotherapist as his third wife. They stayed together for 16 years before calling it quits in 2008. They didn't have any children together. However, according to the terms of the couple's divorce settlement, Cleese was required to pay $13 million in cash and assets. He was also required to give his ex-wife about $1 million until 2016.

The star of the comedic show acquired much success through "Monty Python." However, he said that he did not have the luxury of making "lofty choices" about which films he could turn down. Instead, he commented how he had to sell off multiple properties in order to acquire the funds needed to pay his wife the agreed-upon amount. He says that he will have paid about $23 million within a seven-year time frame by the time that he is finished with the alimony payments. The star remarried in 2012, to a woman who is 31 years his junior. Cleese is currently 74 years old.

Individuals who are dealing with divorce legal issues, especially in high asset divorce cases, may make the decision to contact a family law attorney. Through such a course of action, a person may be able to receive advice about complex property division decisions, such as how prenuptial agreements might affect the terms of their divorce or which assets that they are entitled to receive a portion of. Post-divorce modifications may be necessary in some cases.
