Social media becomes useful tool in child support cases

Authorities throughout the country, including Texas, are cracking down on parents who refuse to pay court-ordered child support, and many officials are turning to social media during their investigations. A county in Wisconsin is only one of those that is using Facebook and other similar sites to bust those shirking child support payment duties.

One Milwaukee father was reportedly ordered to pay $189 in monthly child support payments for his 3-year-old son, but others in the family claim he has spent under $1 on the boy, who has leukemia, since he was born. The father's case was aided by investigation into his Facebook account, which revealed statements made by the father about the large amounts of money he brings home from work.

In yet another case out of Wisconsin, a father who had made only a single $100 child support payment following separation from the child's mother was investigated through social media and found in pictures flaunting large stacks of money. He allegedly bought a music studio instead of paying child support. Thanks to online investigation, the fathers in both of the cases out of Wisconsin are now facing criminal charges for failure to pay child support.

With social media websites increasing in popularity by the day, it is becoming more and more common for courts and law enforcement agencies to use them as investigative tools. If a non-custodial parent is believed to be ignoring child support payments unjustly, it may be time for the custodial parent to contact a family law attorney for advice and information on what remedies are available. Depending on the circumstances, it may be possible to obtain a court-ordered wage garnishment.
