Bristol Palin seeks to mend ties with her children's fathers

Unmarried parents in Texas could achieve parenting agreements similar to those arranged by former reality television show star Bristol Palin. The father of her most recent child, a daughter, has begun taking on his responsibilities as a parent. The veteran Marine and recipient of the Medal of Honor shares joint legal custody.

A judge in Palin's home state ordered the father to visit his daughter twice a month. Although Palin called off her marriage to this man, she supports his role as a father in her daughter's life. On Instagram, she wrote, "Every child deserves two loving parents, so I will continue to encourage that no matter what."

As for the father of her first child, a boy, he remains active in the life of his son. He has been granted joint legal custody, but a judge recently ruled that he must catch up on unpaid child support in the amount of $61,915. Although he acknowledged in a statement on Facebook that he owes the money, he pointed out that he has paid about $600 a month since the birth of his son seven years ago. Because he has contributed $50,000 so far, he feels that he is meeting his responsibilities as a father.

An unmarried parent in a similar situation might want to seek out the guidance of an attorney. Family law matters often involve meeting the requirements of state law and negotiating terms with the other parent. An attorney could assist with negotiations and keep discussions focused on the needs of the child. Paperwork and evidence could also be prepared for court by an attorney who might act to defend a person's parental rights.
